Math is fun, and this book goes straight to that point with creativity and whimsy. Kudos for making what many view as drugery into an accessible and entertaining lesson!
I purchased this from kickstarter and was expecting something with new tips and tricks for remembering and/or figuring out the times table. There was nothing new here and I don't think the story or graphics are good enough to draw my students in to want to read this book.
The best teachers I had in elementary and middle school were the ones who could turn a boring, difficult, or confusion topic into something fun and exciting. That's exactly what this book does. There's really nothing duller than the multiplication table, but "I Hate the Times Table!" makes it come alive through its wonderful illustrations, witty humor, and clever explanations. It takes the focus off of the onus of memorization and instead feels like a wild journey where math concepts simply emerge from the exciting adventures the characters take. Plus, it's chock full of handy ways to multiply, so many that each and every student will find one that resonates with him or her.
The worst thing about elementary school math is the emphasis on "math facts" -- especially the times table. While math facts are essential, they make kids think that math is tedious and painful, whereas real math should be creative and fun. So I wondered how interesting a book could be about the times table. The answer this book is not really about the times table! It just uses the times table as a launching-off point to explore all sorts of arithmetic and geometric curiosities. This book gives kids and their parents page after page of fun math concepts to explore at whatever pace and depth they want, while meanwhile referring back to the times table to help them memorize it. And it's warmly illustrated. Therefore it would be of interest to kids just starting to learn about multiplication, as well as kids who know the times table already and can explore the related concepts.
A clever and colorful book that gets kids interested in math, keeping it fun.
It gives kids a new way to look at things, and learn in the process.
